H Street Corridor

The H Street Corridor Redevelopment is Underway!

H Street Corridor had been a neighborhood of dilapidated and boarded-up buildings with riot-scarred storefronts.  Today, it is one of the fastest developing and appreciating sections of Washington, DC.  Redevelopment has been taking place along a stretch of the corridor from 2nd Street all the way to Maryland Avenue and thus is a neighborhood in transition.

In addition to more attractive public spaces and a trolley or light rail system, the plan for redevelopment of the H Street Corridor calls for a mixture of new housing, retail, and venues for the arts and entertainment.

An Arts Venue Started the Revival

It was the opening and re-purposing of the Atlas Performing Arts Center, an art-deco 1930s movie theater, which became the kickoff for the revival of this area.  The Center has been converted into an arts complex with four theaters and three dance studios as well as production and rehearsal spaces.  This community is now developing into an Arts and Entertainment hub, and one to keep an eye on!

H Street Nightlife

The area is the downtown home of some of the trendiest night spots.  Among them is the Argonaut Tavern which has a nautical theme, and offers casual dining music from a Jukebox; the upper-level provides games of pool and DJ music.

If R&B and dancing is your choice, then H Street Martini Lounge is the spot to be on Thursday and Friday nights.   Go-go bands perform at the Phish Tea Café on Saturday nights.  The Rock and Roll Hotel offers a variety of music on Wednesday through Saturday nights and requires advanced tickets.  Rose’s Dream Bar and Lounge features live go-go and hip-hop music, as well as offering Karaoke on Wednesdays and DJs spinning dance music on Saturdays.

Easy Access to Transportation Spurs Growth

One of the appealing features of this area is that it is close to Union Station and the US Capitol Complex.  In addition to the new housing, as called for in the redevelopment plan, Washington DC real estate along the H Corridor offers huge new office buildings.  And the popular rowhouses along the corridor range mostly from the high 200's to the high 600's.
