Washington, D.C. (District of Columbia) is the capital of the United States and is located on the banks of the Potomac River and bordered by the states of Virginia and Maryland. The District of Columbia and the city of Washington, considered to be the same entity had an estimated city population of 582,049 in 2005 by the Census Bureau. As host to over 180 embassies and hundreds of international organizations, Washington, DC has a substantial population of foreign residents. There are also many students from abroad studying at the local universities and colleges. This adds a cosmopolitan flavor to the city.
REAL ESTATE Within the past few months, Washington DC real estate market is showing some improvement. Recent market conditions in Adams Morgan showed an increase of up to 5% in home prices compared to the same time last year. Listings in that area are averaging 30-60 days on the market with an average home price of about $425,000. Another neighborhood of Dupont Circle shows the same statistics while Mount Pleasant and Columbia Heights show average time on market is from 10-30 days with the average home price around $650,000.
EDUCATION The public school system in the city is operated by District of Columbia Public Schools and consists of 167 schools and learning centers including 101 elementary schools, 11 middle schools, nine junior high schools, 20 senior high schools, six education centers, and 20 special schools.The area also is home to more than 30 charter schools and 30 private schools. Post-secondary education students living in the area have easy commutes to the District of Columbia University, George Washington University, Georgetown University and Howard University, to name only a few.
RECREATION Because The District has three major natural flowing streams: the Potomac River, the Anacostia River and Rock Creek, its residents have access to great outdoor activities. Parks in the area include Rock Creek Park, DC’s urban park that extends 12 miles from the Potomac River to the border of Maryland. Major sites include Rock Creek Park Nature Center and Planetarium, the National Zoo, Carter Barron Amphitheater and Old Stone House. Another park is East Potomac Park, a 300+ acre peninsula located between the Washington Channel and the Potomac River and includes a golf course, a mini-golf course, a playground, an outdoor pool, tennis courts, picnic facilities, and a recreation center. |
